Kayingdi Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
middle Nanhuan (middle Cryogenian) (2)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Western Tianshan. The Kayingdi Fm was named by Wang Jingbin et al. in 1982, and was formally published by Wang Jingbin in 1985. The typical section is situated in Tarqiat of the Kokirqin Mountain south of Sitai, Jinghe County, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu. Middle formation (4 of 6) of Kiaketi Gr).

Synonym: (喀英迪组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Kayingdi Fm is dominantly composed of dark gray, black and grayish green thin-bedded laminated siltstone, pelitic siltstone intercalated with banded sandstone, siliceous shale or grayish green shale. Among of these, the darker rock is rich in organic matter (carbonaceous). It is generally 67.2 to 140 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

This formation rests conformably on the underlying glacial-till dominated Biexibastao Fm

Upper contact

It conformably underlies the Tarqiat Fm

Regional extent

Western Tianshan. With a persistent lithology, the formation is widely distributed and exposed from Sayram Lake north of Huocheng County, eastward to Guozigou, Talisayi then along Kokirqin Mountain to Tarqiat, and Kokirqin area, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region). In eastern Kokirqin area, the sequence is complete but westward to Guozigou it is incomplete.
